Character & Leadership Program

We empower youth to support their community, build relationships, develop self-image, engage in democracy, and respect cultural identities.

Developing A Positive Self-Image

Programs in this area empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect the many cultural identities.

Each year Boys & Girls Clubs of America holds a Youth of the Year competition. Club members compete at local, state, regional and national levels. Our Clubs in Cedar Rapids have had eight Youths of the Year since opening our doors in 1993, including one national Youth of the Year winner, Stacey Walker.

Programs such as Torch Club, Youth of the Year and Young Mentors Movement build Club members' self confidence and help them develop the proper leadership traits for future planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community, and celebrating our national heritage.
